The Magistrate’s Court ordered two local men to settle massive fines for the possession of large amounts of smuggled cigarettes and vaping devices on Tuesday.
Dani bin Awang Damit, 31, was ordered to settle BND485,150 or risk serving jail for 35 months, after he pleaded guilty to possessing 483 cartons, eight packets and 19 sticks of cigarettes; three units of vaping devices; and BND419 cash believed to be proceeds from the sale of the contraband.
The defendant was arrested when Customs officers found the contraband in a raid at his house in RPN Kampong Lambak Kanan on October 31, 2022.
Meanwhile, Haji Adanan bin Haji Sulaiman was ordered to settle a BND100,000 fine or risk serving 18 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to possessing 100 cartons of cigarettes.
The defendant was arrested after he was found in possession of the contraband at Kampong Junjongan on May 29, 2022 during a joint operation by the Royal Brunei Police Force and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif ordered the contraband destroyed and cash forfeited to the state.
