Friday sermon highlights the virtue of helping the needy

The Friday sermon delivered today emphasised the importance of piety, charity, and helping those in need as key principles in Islam. The sermon reminded the congregation that those who are truly honored in the sight of Allah are the ones who live with piety and sincerity.

Islam is a religion that encourages mutual assistance and helping one another, as it promotes good relationships and unity among the Muslim community. Through kindness and cooperation, a strong and united Muslim community can be established, fostering mutual respect and care for others, including family members, friends, and even strangers.

One of the key aspects of mutual assistance highlighted in the sermon was the act of giving charity (sadaqah). Charity nurtures compassion, generosity, and selflessness while strengthening one’s faith. By spending wealth in the way of Allah the Almighty, individuals bring themselves closer to Him. The sermon cited a verse from Surah Al-Hadid, verse 18, emphasising that those who give charity will be rewarded abundantly by Allah.

The sermon further highlighted that charity serves as a means to help those in need, including the poor, orphans, and underprivileged individuals. Islam places great emphasis on the welfare and well-being of orphans, making it a shared responsibility for the Muslim community to care for them, especially those without guardians.

A hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah was mentioned, in which Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stated that those who care for orphans will be close to him in Paradise, just like two fingers held together. This underscores the significant status of those who provide for and support orphans.

Additionally, the sermon urged Muslims to treat orphans with kindness and fairness, as highlighted in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 83. Extending help, whether through financial assistance or providing basic necessities, not only eases their burdens but also brings them joy and comfort.

The sermon also touched on community initiatives such as the ‘Brunei Prihatin’ SMS charity project for orphans under the Dana Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund. The campaign, running from December 2, 2024, to September 2, 2025, provides an accessible platform for the public to contribute and support orphans in the country.

The congregation was reminded that giving charity, regardless of the amount, is a noble act that brings great rewards. More importantly, it is the sincerity behind the act that matters most. – Hakim Hayat
