The welfare and empowerment of people with disabilities (PWDs) were highlighted in the Friday sermon, emphasising inclusivity, support, and the collective responsibility of society to ensure that PWDs lead fulfilling lives.
The sermon underscored the importance of providing specialised education and training tailored to the needs of PWDs, enabling them to achieve independence and contribute meaningfully to national progress. This aligns with Brunei Vision 2035, which envisions a nation where all citizens thrive and actively participate in the country’s development.
Citing Islamic teachings, the sermon referenced the story of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the blind man Abdullah bin Umm Maktum. The Prophet’s interaction served as a reminder of the need for compassion, inclusion, and attentiveness toward the less fortunate.
The National Council on the Welfare of People with Disabilities, established in 2016, plays a pivotal role in supporting PWDs. It oversees nine institutions that cater to various disabilities, including physical, developmental, and sensory impairments. The council also collaborates with four non-governmental organisations to strengthen support systems and provide resources for PWDs.
The sermon also highlighted that PWDs are part of the community and their presence serves as both a test and a blessing. It called for society to appreciate their own blessings, such as the ability to see, hear, and speak, while actively supporting those who face limitations.
Efforts to empower PWDs not only focus on addressing their challenges but also aim to harness their strengths and capabilities. This includes fostering their self-reliance, psychological well-being, and social integration through comprehensive support and training programs.
The sermon concluded with a call for collective action to enhance the quality of life for PWDs. It urged the community to ensure that PWDs feel included and supported, and to pray for resilience and blessings for all citizens, particularly those with disabilities.
Through these efforts, the nation aims to create a more inclusive society that recognises the value of every individual and upholds the principles of compassion and equity. – Hakim Hayat
