FRD reports significant rise in bush, forest fires since January

The Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) received 530 calls on bush and forest fires since January, with 584 hectares of land destroyed nationwide.

The figure represents a vast increase compared to the 47 calls received from January to March 20, 2023, the department said, adding that the increase can be attributed to the hot and dry weather condition being experienced in the country.

The bush and forest fires have also caused air pollution affecting road user’s health and vision due to the thick smoke and haze.

The FRD said it has increased its patrols and monitoring of areas known to be hotspots for bush and forest fires, including the use of drones and firebikes.

The department said it will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure fire hydrants are in good condition and ready for logistics assistance in fire extinguishing operations.

The FRD urged the public not to conduct open burning which can spread and lead to large fires.

The department reminded the public to ensure grass in their gardens and the vicinity is trimmed to avoid the fire spreading rapidly and not to leave flammable material like oil exposed to the sun.

The department added, “Be careful of wild animals or poisonous insects which may seek shelter from fires in or around houses.”

The FRD urged the public to extinguish small bush and forest fires without putting themselves in danger.

The public can report signs of bush and forest fires to FRD through 995 or contact Darussalam Line 123 to report open burning incidents. – James Kon
