Forestry Department looks to support wood-based souvenir industry

The government has recognised the importance of the wood-based souvenir industry and will support it through the Forestry Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.

This was said by Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin during the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting yesterday, in response to LegCo member Yang Berhormat Amran bin Haji Maidin’s query on how the government plans to support these entrepreneurs.

The minister said these entrepreneurs are commendable, noting that they produce these products having regular jobs and other daily commitments. “Some utilise 3D-printers and laser cutters to create high-quality products,” he said, adding that the Forestry Department seeks to uplift these businesses.

The ministry encouraged these entrepreneurs, often working in garages or workshops, to move into dedicated spaces for production.

“The goal is to motivate them into considering making wood souvenirs a full-time enterprise,” he said, adding that the ministry is collaborating with Bank Usahawan and Darussalam Enterprise (DARe) to aid with this transition.

“Three entrepreneurs have expressed willingness to move to dedicated areas, with the goal of expanding their business and enhancing their sustainability.”

The Forestry Department is also committed to assisting entrepreneurs with wood supply by providing a platform to access wood resources, with a focus on utilising recycled wood, said the minister.

“Overall, these initiatives aim to create a conducive environment for entrepreneurs to thrive, potentially increasing their income and fostering long-term sustainability in the wood-based souvenir industry, not only for tourism purposes but also to meet the demand of local souvenirs,” he said. – Rokiah Mahmud
