For a greener future

At least 15 schools nationwide will join a year-long programme with interactive sessions and engaging activities focusing on zero waste education and financial literacy, said Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) in a press statement yesterday.

The series of workshop aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable practices and make informed financial decisions is a concerted efforts by BIBD, Shell Exploration and Production Brunei (SEPB) and Big BWN Project.

The workshop series, titled ‘Waste Not, Save More: Financial Literacy and Zero Waste Education Workshop’, will be conducted with the Science Technology Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre under its Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) outreach programme.

The workshops, as part of Big BWN Project’s Zero Waste Brunei initiative, are open to schools primarily in the rural area nationwide, with an interschool competition at the end of the project next year.

Launching the initiative recently were BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Junaidi bin Haji Masri, SEPB Managing Director Marten Adema, STEP Centre Head Hajah Suriani binti Haji Noor Hashim and Big BWN Project founder Noor Hafizah binti Rashid.

BIBD Chief Marketing Officer and Chair of BIBD Group Sustainability Transformation Group Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Jaafar said BIBD takes pride in its dedication to promoting sustainability education and awareness to the younger generation.

The bank believes that nurturing a sense of responsibility towards the environment and society is vital for the well-being of the planet and future prosperity of the youth.

“By imparting knowledge about sustainable practices and fostering an understanding of environmental challenges, we empower the next generation to become advocates of positive change,” she added.

STEP Centre, in a statement, said the incorporation of financial literacy sessions to STEAM programme enhances its value by providing a reference to orderly and systematic financial management thus fostering comprehensive quality education towards Brunei Vision 2035.

Noor Hafizah said, “We believe that education is the key to creating a sustainable and prosperous future. By equipping students with financial literacy skills and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility, we are empowering the next generation to make informed choices that positively impact their lives, our country and the planet.”

The workshop will cover waste management and the importance of sustainable practices.

Students will learn about zero waste, recycling and reducing single-use plastics as well as budgeting, saving, investing and responsible borrowing.
