The High Commission of India in Brunei Darussalam held a reception to celebrate the 75th Republic Day of India at the Royal Berkshire Hall, Jerudong yesterday.
Representing the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, was Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar as the guest of honour.
The event commenced with the singing of the national anthems of India and Brunei, followed by a speech by High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam Alok Amitabh Dimri.
“India and Brunei have enjoyed friendly relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1984. Over the years, the relations have evolved to encompass various aspects characterised by goodwill, mutual respect, understanding, and enhanced cooperation in the regional and diverse arenas,” the high commissioner said.
The ties between India and Brunei have continued to strengthen over the past year, with bilateral relations advancing under the guidance of both leaderships. The high commissioner also highlighted that post-pandemic, trade and business exchanges between India and Brunei have flourished, with food, automotive, machinery, frozen meat and cattle emerging as major exports.
Both parties identified agriculture, ICT, science and technology, healthcare, and education as potential areas for collaboration. Bilateral cooperation in digitisation, e-commerce, and e-governance has been prioritised, with officials and experts from Brunei participating in training modules on Nano satellite programs, cybersecurity and e-ITEC.
The reception also saw the ceremonial cutting of a cake by the minister and high commissioner. – Adib Noor
