High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona underscored the strong bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the Sultanate, highlighting the shared values of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect.
In her remarks at the 53rd Independence and National Day of Bangladesh reception at The Rizqun International Hotel last Thursday, she expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration across various sectors, including trade, agriculture, energy, tourism, education, healthcare and information technology. Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin was the guest of honour.
The high commissioner noted that the minister’s attendance underscored the strong bilateral ties between the two countries and emphasised the shared values of friendship and cooperation.
She also paid homage to those who fought for Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, including the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and lauded the leadership of Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.
She said the prime minister’s vision has propelled the nation towards remarkable development and prosperity, with Bangladesh’s journey from a least developed country to a developing nation in less than two decades reflecting the transformative impact of her governance.
Meanwhile, as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the high commissioner spoke about Bangladesh’s commitment to women’s empowerment and gender equality, recognising the contribution of women to the nation’s progress.
Reflecting on her own experiences, as a woman and a diplomat, she emphasised the delicate balance of asserting authority while overcoming outdated stereotypes.
Nahida shared anecdotes of diffusing tense situations with compliments and strategically placed emojis, illustrating the unique power dynamics at play in diplomacy.
In closing, the high commissioner reaffirmed her dedication to building a ‘Smart Bangladesh’, as envisioned by Hasina, and expressed gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for his kindness towards the Bangladesh community. – Lyna Mohamad
