Employee sentenced for office theft

A general helper who confessed to stealing printers, monitors, speakers, keyboards and CPUs from an office in Kampong Perumpong, Sungai Liang last month was sentenced to 15 months’ jail yesterday.

During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Awang Mahli disclosed that Rezo bin Saidi, 42, had been assigned to repair a broken door in the office kitchen. However, he used the opportunity to commit theft.

A colleague of the defendant visited the office, which had been unoccupied for some time, on November 1 and discovered the computers and equipment were missing. A police report was filed, leading to the defendant’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen items.

In delivering the sentence, Acting Senior Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid took into account the defendant’s guilty plea.

However, these were weighed against aggravating circumstances, such as the breach of trust with his employer and the fact that he had previously committed property-related offences in 2019, indicating a lack of remorse. – Fadley Faisal
