Emergency preparedness exercise from Oct 16 to 18

Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) will conduct a Table Top Exercise and Field Airport Emergency Preparedness Exercise from October 16 to 18 themed ‘Towards the Growth of Safe Aviation’.

The exercises will see the participation of government agencies from MTIC, Royal Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force, Ministry of Health, Immigration and National Registration Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department, and Fire and Rescue Department.

DCA advised the public not to be alarmed and assured that there will be no disruption to airport services including flight operations during the exercise.

DCA, which is a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is committed to ensure that the airport and airline operations are compliant with the safety and security requirements of ICAO Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and the Brunei Aviation Requirements (BARs).

The compliance of regulations is to also ensure safe and secure air passage of passengers and goods through the Brunei International Airport and is part of the MTIC 2025 Strategic Plan objectives such as safety and security, service excellence; and promotion of sustainable growth.

AIRPORT OPERATIONS

Part of the safety requirement for an airport is to have adequate emergency response capabilities. DCA is responsible for leading the execution of the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP).

The exercise is to ensure the readiness of all stakeholders in dealing with emergencies involving flight operations and terminal building services.

The outcome of the exercises will strengthen the emergency responses to elevate the safety standards at Brunei International Airport.

AIRLINE OPERATIONS

The Brunei International Airport operates six airlines – one local airline operator and five foreign operated – airlines and are required to comply with the Brunei International Airport AEP.

DCA, for its role as the aviation authority for Brunei Darussalam has certified the airlines in accordance with BARs and ICAO standards for air operations and is actively monitoring the compliance of safety requirement under the Brunei DCA Oversight Programme. – James Kon
