An 18-year-old daycare worker is facing hefty fine and lengthy jail terms for injuring a one-year-old girl in her care.
The defendant, a local woman with her identity withheld for the child’s protection, pleaded guilty to the charge yesterday. The charge states that she exposed the victim in a manner likely to cause physical injury.
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Fitri binti Kiprawi, the defendant had caused severe injuries to the victim’s private parts while cleaning the child in the daycare’s bathroom on January 30.
Intermediate Court Judge Hajah Hazarena binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Abu Hurairah will hand down sentence on August 31 and ordered the defendant remanded.
The charge under Section 28(1) of the Children and Young Persons Act, Chapter 219, states that any person who, being a person having the care of a child or young person, abuses, assaults, neglects, abandons or exposes the child in a manner likely to cause them physical or emotional injury or who causes or permits them to be abused, assaulted, neglected, abandoned or exposed is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding BND20,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years with (or without) whipping not exceeding 10 strokes, or both. – Fadley Faisal
