Compulsive litterers ought to face jail time

Kudos to the authorities for managing to keep the river along Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas rubbish-free. Thanks to their efforts, I can now enjoy the beautiful river while having my morning jog.

However, I’m rather distraught that there is so little appreciation for what the authorities are doing to make these facilities clean for the general public.

While the park is now immaculate, the surrounding streets are often lined with plastic bottles and wrappers, reflecting the general attitude of certain people when it comes to public spaces.

What I don’t understand is why these people couldn’t wait until they came across a garbage bin before discarding their rubbish. Is there a compulsive need to litter? Does it hurt to hold on to unwanted items for more than a few seconds?

I feel for the authorities. Every effort seems to be offset by these irresponsible people. Even if there is a rubbish bin in every corner of the capital, I’m pretty sure these litterbugs will still find a way to defile public facilities. Perhaps the only solution is to install CCTVs along every street to catch them in the act and threaten them with jail time.
