Chinese representatives visit local chamber of commerce

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCC) of Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday received a courtesy call from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region representatives, who are currently in the country on a working visit, at the chamber’s Dato Ong Kim Kee Hall.

The nine representatives from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region led by Vice Mayor Wang Wenze of Qinzhou City were received by CCC president Lim Han Chiong.

Delegate members comprised Standing Vice Minister – Nanning Comprehensive Free Trade Zone Administration Committee Xie Hongbin; Guangxi Supply Chain Service Group Co Ltd Vice General Manager Zhang Yang; and Industrial and Commercial Bank Of China GuangXi branch Vice President Yang Shiliang and Vice GM, Major Customer Services Centre Peng Zgenqiang.

Deputy Director of Qinzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce Mao Hanlim and Department of Commerce of Guangxi Zhang Autonomous Region officials Li Wei and Huang Zhi were also part of the delegation.

President Lim provided a brief history of the CCC which was established in 1947 as the Chinese Association before eventually taking its current name, which he said was “in alignment with cultural changes, an increase in commercial activities, and the chamber’s location in the capital, which is the centre of national culture, politics, economy and trade as well as a constantly growing population”.

He added, “The Chinese business community believed that to foster unity and cooperation, with the consensus of all members, the name had to be changed.”

He said the chamber’s objectives include safeguarding the interests of its members, strengthening trade ties with other chambers, developing commerce and industry, promoting national economic prosperity, supporting community welfare and education, and collaborating with the government to implement national policies.

“Currently, the chamber has approximately 1,000 members inclusive of corporate members, affiliate members and individual members from various industries such as food and beverage, tourism, computers technology, car accessories, construction, real estate development, logistics, insurance, goldsmiths, professional services and import and export,” he said.

He believes working visits not only foster mutual friendship but also provide opportunities for bilateral cooperation and development.

The president also highlighted the Sultanate’s efforts to diversify the economy with industries such as agriculture, aquaculture, finance, logistics, tourism and food and beverage to reduce dependency on oil and gas.

“The government also encourages foreign direct investment to strengthen the national economy and create new job opportunities and achieve the national development goals of Brunei Vision 2035,” he said.

“The CCC is looking forward to explore development opportunities in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, seeking more potential and directions for cooperation. Through mutual efforts, both parties aim to promote in depth collaboration in economy and trade,” Lim added. – Lyna Mohamad
