A local working as a cashier at a mobile phone shop was sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to compensate her employers’ loss totalling BND7,285.
Senior Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner yesterday gave Dayangku Nurul Afizzah binti Pengiran Embran, 22, five months to settle the compensation order or risk serving an additional three months’ jail.
Dayangku Nurul Afizzah got the job in Kiulap in October 2022, according to prosecutor Nurul Husna binti Abidin.
The prosecutor further revealed that the defendant started stealing about a month into the job until last month.
Within that time, she made away with four smartphones and a smart watch.
She used a phone and the smart watch but sold off the rest on Facebook, according to the prosecutor.
She gained BND2,900 from the sales and spent it on herself.
The court heard that the defendant’s thefts would not have been discovered had it not been a colleague going through CCTV footage dated June 24 which caught the defendant stealing a phone.
The colleague reported the theft to a member of the management on June 26, who confronted the defendant.
The accused admitted to taking the phone and the management discovered more thefts during the confrontation.
A police report was lodged on July 1 leading to her arrest on July 25, the court heard.
Investigations confirmed the defendant’s thefts and the phones never recovered. – Fadley Faisal
