Chief of International Enforcement for Conservation and Protection, Canada’s law enforcement arm for fisheries, Sean Wheeler will be among the invited speakers at the upcoming Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (Brunei MYCE 2023) under the Sustaining marine biodiversity through blue economy symposium.

Wheeler will share experience in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and will present a talk on Canada’s efforts and partnership in the fight against illegal fishing.

Wheeler, who will be speaking in the third session on ‘Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture: Enhancing marine biodiversity and economic development’ on June 8, will bring with him a wealth of experience and knowledge on IUU fishing issues.

The Canadian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam thanked Brunei’s Fisheries Department for their work in organising the symposium.

Wheeler took up the post at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) where his team manages enforcement operations targetting the issue of IUU fishing globally, including managing Canada’s remote sensing programme – the Dark Vessel Detection platform, which he will also share at the upcoming symposium.

The team has participated in several regional fisheries management organisation negotiations, high seas enforcement operations, and also supports developing states.
