The Sultanate is set to launch a new initiative, the Brunei Digital Identity (BruneiID), as part of the country’s broader vision to enhance digital transactions and ensure secure, efficient online services. Announced by Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha during the presentation of the Annual Supply Bill for the fiscal year 2025/2026 at the 21st Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting on Thursday, the initiative aims to provide citizens with a reliable digital credential for conducting secure and seamless online transactions.
The trial phase for BruneiID is scheduled to begin shortly, with a six-month rollout. This phase will focus on gathering user feedback and ensuring the platform’s readiness for a full-scale public launch. The project is part of Brunei’s ongoing efforts to advance its digital transformation, as outlined in the National Digital Economy Blueprint.
With a focus on the growing need for digital security and the rapid pace of technological advancements, the government allocated BND146.5 million for Information Technology (IT) projects across various ministries to support the digitalisation of public services. The introduction of BruneiID is expected to bolster confidence in digital services by providing a safe, centralised means of verifying personal identities online.
The Digital Identity project is one of the flagship projects under the Digital Economy Masterplan 2025 and aligns with the government’s broader strategy to modernise public sector services and improve efficiency.
