A memorandum of judicial cooperation (MOJC) was signed between the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia’s Federal Court to strengthen communication, collaboration and cooperation on issues relating to dispute avoidance and resolution recently.
The MOJC was signed by Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong Wan Oon on behalf of the supreme court and Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat on behalf of the federal court.
The Malaysian chief justice and delegation called on Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong prior to the signing of the MOJC. The chief justices held discussions on court administration, judicial education and training as well as developments on the use of technology and voice to text transcription in court proceedings.
The MOJC formalised ties between the judiciaries of the Sultanate and Malaysia as well as establish a working group to develop a plan of action to chart future judicial cooperation.
This is the fourth memorandum signed between the supreme court and other jurisdictions – Chinese Supreme People’s Court on September 21, 2004, Hong Kong Department of Justice on May 4, 2023 and Singaporean Supreme Court on July 18, 2023.
Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Hayatul Akmal binti Abdul Aziz, Chief Registrar of the Malaysian Federal Court Zamri bin Bakar and Deputy Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nur Ezira Mahadi were present at the signing ceremony. – Fadley Faisal
