A delegation from Brunei Darussalam attended the ASEAN Workshop on International Legal Cooperation (ILC) in Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in Bangkok, Thailand from December 11-13.

Organised by the ASEAN Senior Official Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) in partnership with ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking programme (ASEAN-ACT) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the workshop aimed to present and discuss the updated draft of the zero draft of the ASEAN Compendium on International Legal Cooperation on Trafficking in Persons Cases (ASEAN ILC Compendium) and the ASEAN Handbook on International Legal Cooperation in Trafficking in Persons Cases (ASEAN ILC Handbook). The gathered insights and inputs will finalise the ASEAN ILC Compendium and contribute to updating the ASEAN ILC Handbook.

The workshop also offered an opportunity to explore international cooperation in responding to transnational TIP cases in the ASEAN region. The finalised ASEAN ILC Compendium and updated ASEAN ILC Handbook will be submitted to the ASEAN SOMTC for endorsement.

The workshop provided an opportunity between enforcement agencies and prosecutors in dealing with trafficking in persons cases in ASEAN member countries to explore cooperation, exchange views and information, and learn good practices in the ASEAN region and internationally.

The delegates comprised members from the Prime Minister’s Office, Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chamber, Human Trafficking Investigation Unit of the Royal Brunei Police Force and Department of Labour in capacity as the National Working Committee for Anti-Trafficking in Persons.

The National Working Committee of Anti-Trafficking in Persons has always been committed the continuous efforts to prevent and counter the threat of human trafficking issues in Brunei Darussalam. The National Working Committee will also continue to adopt a victim-centric approach to the vulnerable groups of trafficking in persons. – James Kon
