Long queues leading towards border checkpoints in the Sultanate were back as people made their way to Miri and Kota Kinabalu following the long weekend to mark the Royal Brunei Armed Forces public holiday.
Jamal and his family said the traffic queue heading towards the Labu Control Post in the Temburong District was quite long on Thursday evening, that they made a u-turn and returned home as they realised it would take nearly five hours to pass the border.
“However, late yesterday morning, the queue was not as bad, and we managed to reach Lawas around lunch time,” he said.
Meanwhile, motorists entering Miri yesterday morning had to queue up for as far as 11 kilometres towards the Sungai Tujoh border checkpoint.
Money changers in the country also ran out of Malaysian ringgit. One traveller who wished to visit Sarawak yesterday, retuned empty-handed after the money changer in Berakas ran out of Malaysian currency. He had to visit another money changer, and found the queue there was also too long, he said.
The public holiday also coincided with the Kaamatan Festival in Sabah and the Gawai celebration in Sarawak. – Azlan Othman
