The Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old Bangladeshi man to five months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for overstaying in the country.
Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif delivered the sentence to Nasim Uddin, following his guilty plea to the charge brought by Immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra bin Haji Adanan.
The sentencing came after a recent enforcement operation, Operation Kabat 116/2024, led by the Immigration and National Registration Department’s Law Enforcement Division in Kuala Belait, focusing on foreign workers’ residences in Mukim Liang.
During the operation, officers checked the documentation of several foreign workers, leading to the arrest of three individuals who failed to produce valid documents. Further investigations revealed that two had overstayed their immigration passes, in violation of Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, while the third was suspected of harbouring immigration offenders, an offence under Section 55(1)(d) of the same Act.
The Immigration and National Registration Department urges the public to report any immigration violations through their hotline at 8734888 or 8753888 for Bandar Seri Begawan, or 8984111 for Kuala Belait.
