Some 150 students from universities across the ASEAN University Network (AUN) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) collected over 200 kilogrammes of waste in a beach clean-up at Serasa Beach recently as part of the 14-day UBD-AUN Summer Camp 2024.
The activity, organised by UBD in collaboration with Green Brunei, focused on removing litter and marine debris to protect local wildlife and preserve the coastline.
It was in line with the camp’s theme ‘Green Horizons: Harnessing Digital Transformation for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’ and aimed to instil a sense of environmental responsibility among the participants.
“The beach clean-up was an eye-opening experience for me,” said Vo Ngoc Bich Huyen from Vietnam. “It made me realise the importance of our actions in preserving the environment and inspired me to take more initiatives to protect our planet.”
Meanwhile, the students also participated in the Green Horizons Flower Planting ceremony at UBD campus.
“Participating in this activity was a transformative experience. It was inspiring to see many young people come together to contribute to a greener future,” said Siti Mariah from the National University of Singapore.
“It is empowering to know that our small actions can make a significant impact,” said Thiri Shin from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.
The conclusion of the activities underscores UBD’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship among the youth.
The 14-day summer camp is a short-term exchange programme promoting interregional cross-border exchange and stimulating multidisciplinary learning experiences to prepare students with future skills.
The camp aimed to empower students with global competency skills and promote interregional cross-border exchange.
Students attended lectures on topics such as smart cities and biodiversity, artificial intelligence and remote sensing for biodiversity monitoring and preservation, as well as participated in excursion activities such as a tree planting ceremony and a full-day excursion to discover the culture of the Sultanate.
UBD Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Joyce Teo Siew Yean was present.
