A Nursing Forum focusing on the significance of mental health awareness in high-pressure work environments, particularly for healthcare professionals, was held on November 3 at the Conference Hall of Suri Seri Begawan (SSB) Hospital.
Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Nurses Association (PENJURU), the event aimed to enhance the self-confidence and efficiency of nurses and midwives in performing their duties.
The forum began with a speech by PENJURU President Datin Paduka Hajah Suraya Noraidah binti Abdullah, who emphasised that nurses and midwives are not exempted from mental health risks.
“The talks will explore research and initiatives to mitigate these risks and ensure the quality of care that the public expects,” she stated.
Invited speakers from various mental health fields delivered the talks, including Nursing Officer Special Grade Hajah Radiah binti Omar, Nurse Manager of the Psychiatric Unit at SSB Hospital Aminol Azrin bin Haji Maideen, and Assistant Prison Counsellor of the Counselling Services Division at the Prisons Department Fariszal bin Ali.
Hajah Radiah highlighted the importance of self-care for mental well-being in the workplace. Aminol Azrin presented strategies for enhancing mental health among nurses through evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions. Fariszal concluded the session by discussing mental health through the lens of Islamic teachings and its practical applications, followed by a question and answer segment with attendees.
The forum was moderated by Haji Mohd Reduan bin Abdul Fata, Nursing Officer at SSB Hospital. – Daniel Lim
