ASEAN defence ministers discussed security challenges in the region at Pullman Luang Prabang Hotel and Resort in Laos yesterday.
The ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Retreat’s exchange of views focused on ADMM’s post-2025 strategy in response to current and future security challenges, which included ADMM-Plus membership expansion, impacts of major power rivalries and maintenance of ASEAN unity.
Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof led the delegation from Brunei Darussalam to the meeting.
The minister emphasised the importance of ADMM and ADMM-Plus as platforms in supporting regional defence dialogue and cooperation, and expressed support for the development and enhanced engagement with ASEAN’s external partners.
The retreat also observed the adoption of the joint statement by the ASEAN defence ministers on ADMM’s accomplishments of the implementation of the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025.
The joint statement captures the progress and commitment towards implementing the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025, emphasising on enhancing regional peace, security, and cooperation, and in turn, contributing to the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
Brunei Darussalam also held bilateral meetings with Laos and Timor-Leste on the sidelines.
