ASEAN centrality key to regional security, says deputy minister

Brunei Darussalam will continue to emphasise the importance of ASEAN centrality in upholding the security and stability of this region, said Deputy Minister (Security and Law) at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dato Seri Paduka Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu during the 11th International Meeting of High-Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Matters in Russia.

The meeting was held in Moscow on May 23, where the deputy minister said that Brunei and other ASEAN member states will continue to foster long-standing ties with dialogue partners, such as Russia.

The deputy minister served as the deputy chairman of the National Security Committee during the 3rd ASEAN-Russian Consultation of the High-Ranking Representatives for Security Issues held as part of the meeting.

The consultation was co-chaired by Secretary to the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev and Cambodia’s Lieutenant General Ke Da, who is the country coordinator for ASEAN-Russia dialogue partner relations. The consultation was attended by ministers and senior officials from ASEAN member states.

Meanwhile the security meeting was attended by representatives from 101 countries.

On May 25, the deputy minister also delivered a statement on international cooperation to combat illegal drug trafficking during a roundtable discussion.

On May 22, the Brunei delegation attended a bilateral meeting with Russian counterparts to discuss matters related to the memorandum of understanding between the Brunei National Security Committee and the Russian Security Council, which was signed in 2019.

The Brunei delegation included Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Russia Pengiran Muhammad Husaini bin Pengiran Penggawa Laila Bentara Istiadat Diraja Dalam Istana Pengiran Haji Alauddin and Permanent Secretary (Security and Law) at the PMO Hajah Nor Hashimah binti Haji Mohammed Taib and senior officers from the PMO.
