Donius Lamaris won the prize for the largest catch with a 10.78 kilogramme stingray during the surf cast competition at the Silver Jubilee Recreational Park in the Belait District on Sunday.
The surf casting competition, the third iteration organised by the Kampong Pandan B Village Consultative Council, was held in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 78th birthday celebration.
Around 120 surf casters participated, reeling in lines along the beachfront on Sunday.
“Alhamdulillah, the reception for the Surf Cast Competition has been positive,” said Village Head of Kampong Pandan B Muhammad Rawiyani bin Morney.
After the competition, Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann handed out prizes.
Also present was the Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad.
At the end of the competition, prizes were handed out to the winners by the guest of honour, with the highlight being the largest catch which went to Donius Lamaris who caught a monstrous ray weighing in at 10.78kg. – Daniel Lim
