The Fuzhou Shiyyi Association of Brunei Darussalam is one of the most influential Chinese organisations in Brunei, said Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo.
“In recent years, under the leadership of President Dr Andy Lau Sie Chuong, the association has upheld the admirable traditions of determination and love for our homeland. It has united and led the many Fuzhou compatriots in Brunei, who have worked diligently to build their businesses and support one another,” he said at the association’s Chinese New Year celebration yesterday.
He added that the association “has made significant contributions to Brunei’s economic and social development. The association members have always been dedicated to the welfare and growth of Chinese-Bruneian relations”.
Recalling the recent state visit by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, he highlighted, “China-Brunei relationship continues to be at a high level. Not long ago, His Majesty made a successful state visit to China, yielding fruitful results.
“Under the leadership of the two heads of state, both countries are working together towards building a China-Brunei community of shared destiny, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations. Practical cooperation in infrastructure, energy, agriculture and cultural fields will steadily progress, creating more benefits for both countries and their people. It will also bring greater development opportunities for the Chinese community in Brunei.”
A highlight of the celebration was the tossing of yee sang by the ambassador along with the association president and executive members. – James Kon
