Afghan delegation to attend COP29

XINHUA – A delegation of Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) left yesterday for Azerbaijan to attend the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the NEPA said in a statement.

This is the first time that the Afghan caretaker government, since assuming power in August 2021, has been invited to send a delegation to the conference.

“We are seeking to share Afghanistan’s climate vulnerabilities with the world in various forums during this conference,” NEPA chief and head of the delegation Mawlawi Matiul Haq Khalis said before departure at the Kabul airport. According to NEPA data, climate change has become a precarious menace to Afghanistan where temperatures in southern areas have increased by 2.4 degrees Celsius over the past century. The UN climate change conference is aimed at accelerating action to tackle climate crisis across the world. The conference is scheduled to take place in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, from today to November 22.
