It is clear that creative art by persons with disabilities illustrates the vast scope of artistic expression. When produced by this special group, the resulting paintings and other creative arts gain immense value and significance, Acting Director of the Department of Community Development at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Siti Zaharah binti Haji Abd Razak said.
She said this in her welcoming remarks at the ‘Art for All’ Exhibition yesterday. “This year, the ‘Art for All’ Exhibition explores the theme ‘Space’, which delves into space, astronomy, and the celestial realm. The exhibition enables artists to unravel and deepen the vast, mysterious domain of the cosmos, incorporating elements such as planets, stars, comets, and nebulae into their artwork by combining scientific knowledge with imagination and creativity,” Siti Zaharah said.
Over 100 artworks, including paintings, handicrafts, models and replicas created by persons with disabilities are on display at Gallery 4 of the Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja until January 10, 2025.
Siti Zaharah highlighted that alongside traditional artworks, the exhibition features replicas of astronauts and spacecraft models.
She shared, “One of the spacecraft replicas is made entirely from recycled paper waste.
The papers were rolled, repurposed and crafted into intricate architecture, demonstrating remarkable skills.
“This replica holds immense value as its creator is a person with hearing impairment, who, despite having no formal art education, has developed a natural talent for producing such works.
“He has created numerous replicas of mosques, buildings and landmarks in Brunei Darussalam and abroad.” – James Kon
