A legacy of dedication

Rogayah Binti Haji Mohiddin’s Journey with Brunei Red Crescent Society

Since joining the Brunei Red Crescent Society (BRC) in 1993, Rogayah binti Haji Mohiddin has dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her roles and responsibilities within the organisation, as well as to various volunteer activities for the community.

Her contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic were immeasurable. She tirelessly attended to patients and their families, distributed essential supplies to households, and remained on duty without respite, only returning home briefly to rest and rejuvenate.

Once the situation stabilised and normalcy returned, Rogayah rewarded herself with an Umrah pilgrimage at the end of last year. However, upon her return, she began experiencing severe back pain, which now necessitates the use of a wheelchair for mobility.

Medical professionals suggested that her condition might be a result of the heavy physical demands she endured during the pandemic. Despite this setback, Rogayah remains undeterred, believing that everything happens for a reason. She is optimistic about her recovery and takes solace in knowing her efforts were not in vain. Her dedication was recognised as she was among the 41 BRC members recently awarded the BRC Distinguished Medal of Honour.

This prestigious medal was introduced for the first time in commemoration of BRC’s 76th anniversary. The 41 recipients, comprising veteran senior officers, officers, members, and volunteers, were honored for their exceptional service to BRC.

A teacher at Katok Secondary School, Rogayah, in her early 40s, shared her story with the Bulletin. Her passion for providing first aid and assisting those in need, especially victims of natural disasters like floods, began during her school years and led her to join BRC. Her commitment and love for volunteering have only grown stronger since then.

“One needs to be sincere, inquisitive, bold, and honest in their contributions or services,” she said. “Additionally, maintaining a high spirit and determination to help others, regardless of the time or situation, is crucial.”

As an educator, Rogayah also instills these values in her students, encouraging those interested in becoming BRC members to engage in volunteer activities. She emphasizes that such efforts are not only rewarding in this life but also hold significant value in the afterlife.

Balancing her teaching career and her role as a BRC member, Rogayah responds to calls for her services whenever she is permitted to be relieved from her classes. She often dedicates her time to the society after working hours, especially during public holidays.

Rogayah pledges to remain loyal to BRC and to continue rendering her services as long as she is fit, healthy, and capable of fulfilling her responsibilities, regardless of her age. – LYNA MOHAMAD
