THE country will experience a partial lunar
eclipse just before dawn on Wednesday, July
17. The next occurrence of the phenomenon
will be on June 21, 2020.
The eclipse will be visible in Brunei and
most parts of Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe
and South America.
A partial eclipse occurs when the Earth
moves between the sun and the moon but
the three celestial bodies do not form a
straight line. This causes some part of the
moon’s surface to be covered by the Earth’s
shadow.
From Brunei, a lunar eclipse will start
when the moon passes through the Earth’s
penumbral shadow beginning at 2.44am
local time on July 17. The partial lunar
eclipse phase will start when part of Earth’s
darkest shadow or umbra covers the moon
at 4.01am.
For Brunei, the maximum eclipse will
occur at 5.30am. This is when more than half

IT IS a day of significance
for Brunei-India relations in
the space exploration arena

the country’s airspace during
its separation stage.
Chandrayaan-2 will build
on the work of its predecessor
lunar mission Chandrayaan-1,
most famous for helping
discover molecules of water
on the Moon a decade ago.
