Royal Birthday

| Daniel Lim |

BEING able to live in a house to call

one’s own is one of the many bucket

list items most individuals would love

to tick off during their lifetimes.

Such a luxury is not easy to come

by, not least because of the financial

heft it involves, andHisMajestySultan

Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin

Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan

Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul

Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang

Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is

certainly aware of this.

Because of this, His Majesty has

strived to make affordable housing

available to his subjects as much

as possible, efforts which are seen

throughtheconstructionofthousands

of houses under the government

National Housing Scheme (RPN)

and Landless Indigenous Citizens

Housing Scheme (STKRJ).

Accordingtothelatestdatafromthe

Housing Development Department,

over 28,000 government-subsidised

houses and land lots under the RPN

citizens since the government began

Of this total, 18,699 units are in

the Brunei-Muara District, 6,581 are

in Belait, 2,695 are located in Tutong,

while 635 are in Temburong.

The houses were most recently

handed out in May this year when His

Majesty presented key plaques to 451

citizens for homes under RPN Bukit

Beruang in the Tutong District, in a

ceremony held at the Seri Kenangan

Hall of the Civic Centre Complex in

Pekan Tutong.

Out of these 451 recipients, 65

were assigned cluster-type units,

while 386 were provided with

terrace-type houses.

RPN Bukit Beruang – the latest

housing development under the RPN

– consists of 756 house units built on

474 hectares of land, comprising 368

cluster-type units and 368 terrace

units. The complex was developed

with a comprehensive housing

concept which will soon include

public amenities such as a school,

a mosque, a recreational park and a

playground.

with new homes in February as well:

489 received cluster house units

under the Kampong Lugu National

Housing Scheme (RPN Kampong

Lugu), while 56 were awarded semi-

detached houses – 24 under RPN

Kampong Panchor Mengkubau, 10

under RPN Kampong Meragang,

proud new homeowners in February

individuals – 301 were given keys to

cluster houses and 53 were awarded

terrace houses – while an additional
