Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad joined some 300 senior citizens for a day of fun activities at the Towards Energising and Guiding the Aged Society (TEGAS) Walkathon held in conjunction with the International Day of the Elderly 2023 at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas in the capital yesterday.
The minister joined a warm-up session led by Youth and Sports Department’s assistant karate coach Mohammad Nabil bin Abdul Malik.
Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi then launched the walkathon and joined the one-kilometre (km) walk around the park.
The event also saw an exhibition by Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) undergraduates and activities by Community Development Department (JAPEM) clients.
There were also performances and handicrafts displayed by members of senior citizens activity centres nationwide.
The walkathon was organised by the Wise and Well Group, which is made up of medical students from PAPRSB IHS of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, in cooperation with JAPEM under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and volunteers from Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan.
The event was aimed at raising awareness on the benefits of exercise to healthy ageing as well as promoting care for the elderly. – James Kon
