236 join eight-hour endurance race

Some 236 runners from Brunei and beyond put their stamina and mental fortitude to the test in an eight-hour endurance race on August 3 and 4.

Ahmad Ahsan bin Haji Ibrahim won the men’s open category with 21 laps while Sefli anak Ahar won the men’s veteran category with 20 laps.

Nur Ainulhakimah binti Mahmud won women’s open category with 18 laps while Jennyfer Townsend won women’s veteran category with 17 laps.

Earlier, the runners gathered at the Forestry Department’s premises in Kampong Sungai Liang on the night of August 3. They were flagged off at midnight and ran along assigned route that meandered along trekking path illuminated by runners’ head-mounted lights and flashlights held by organising committee members along the route.

Over the course of the competition, runners competed to see who could complete the most laps in their categories within eight hours. As the morning sun rose and 8am rolled around, a horn was sounded to signify the end of the race.

Assistant Belait District Officer Muhammad Syazwan bin Nordin presented prizes to the winners in each category.

The race was organised by the Kampong Sungai Liang Village Consultative Council (MPK) in collaboration with the Forestry Department, the Belait District Office, Lumut Runners, Santai Art, and Train Smart Road and Trail.

The competition was held in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 78th birthday celebration. – Daniel Lim
