A beach cleaning campaign at Meragang Beach saw 16 bundles of rubbish, including plastic, cans, glass bottles, food containers and other waste collected in an hour.
The campaign organised by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences Student Council (IHSSC) saw 43 students participating, comprising 18 members of the IHSSC and Leadership and Innovation Executive (ELI) and 25 UBD student volunteers.
The event was led by Siti Amal Zahirah Rusyidina binti Bahrin in collaboration with ELI and Chief Executive Nurhaziqah Munifah binti Mohamad Rosmini from UBD. The campaign began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by a warm-up session and group divisions. Each group was led by a student council member.
The event concluded with the recitation of Doa Selamat led by Mohammad Ersyad bin Sudirman and closing remarks by Nur Liyana Syazwani binti Sulaiman.
A team of drivers transported the rubbish to the landfill in Meragang.
The campaign supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3, by contributing to a less polluted environment and encouraging student activity, promoting health and well-being among both the environment and students.
The campaign also aimed to foster a sense of responsibility and awareness among UBD students about the importance of environmental care. It further promotes SDG 11, contributing to the maintenance of public areas and ensuring the cleanliness of common areas, particularly coastal areas.
This campaign also strengthens cooperation among students while contributing to the preservation of natural assets such as the beach and its ecosystem.
It aligns with SDG 13 by encouraging direct involvement in action to combat climate change. Participants contribute to global efforts to reduce climate change and raise awareness of the importance of such action. – Fadhil Yunus
