14-year-old crowned chess tournament champion

With a total score of 8.5, 14-year-old Aiden Syahmi was crowned champion of the Chess Blitz Championship 2024.

Awangku Abdul Wafie Ikhwan was placed second followed by IIham bin Haji Abdul Hamid in third. In the 50 year old category, Haji Bahar emerged as champion followed by Haji Kipli.

Aston Lit won the under-16 category followed by Khaizuran Rezuan and Chang Tristan.

Ashmit Sreejith was named champion in the under-18 category, while Tie King Hieng was placed first in the under-14 category, followed by Fong Zhi Jian and Robert Kamalov.

Liyana Zakaria received the best lady award and St Andrew’s School received the best school award.

Acting Director of Youth and Sports at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Haji Mohamad Rosfazilah bin Haji Yusly, the guest of honour, handed over the prizes to the winners.

The championship was held in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 78th birthday celebration.

The Brunei-Muara District Chess Championship Executive Committee in collaboration with the Brunei Chess Federation organised the tournament held at the National Chess Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex. – James Kon
