Yayang’s unique Siamese soft coat, a clean sheen and charm melted the judges’ hearts, with the furry beauty being crowned the Best of the Best in a Cat Competition for local and mixed breeds at the Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Hall yesterday.
A total of 24 cats, including Persian, Siamese, mixed and normal breeds, competed in various categories of the competition organised by Women’s Institute of Brunei Darussalam (WI) in the Belait District.
The healthiest cat, the largest, the most beautiful fur, the most beautiful, the most photogenic, and the coveted Best of the Best also received awards.
Event chairperson Hajah Julia binti Chee said the categories highlighted the cats’ best aspects while fostering an appreciation for the efforts and care made by their owners.Mohd Yunos bin Haji Pungut, who cares for his cats and strays across the district, received the Cat Lover Award.
Meanwhile, Oggy was placed first in the Persian category, which she also achieved at last year’s competition.
Meanwhile, Siamese cat Yayang was placed first in the Siamese Category followed by Contajte and Jojo in second and third.
Mixed breed Eva was placed first in the mixed category with Dee Dee and Nokie coming in second and third places.
In the normal category, Joker was placed first, followed by Mango and Tiger in second and third spots.
In the special category, Yayang received a number of awards in addition to the Best of the Best, which included the Healthiest and the Most Beautiful Awards.
Winning the award for the largest cat was Joker, while the Most Beautiful Fur award was won by Eva and the Photogenic award went to Nokie.
The competition is an annual event held by the WI to mark the 77th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Wife of the Acting Assistant Belait District Officer Nor’Aziah binti Jalani handed the prizes to owners of the winning cats, followed by a tour of the premises.
Each cat was judged by a panel comprising members of the institute in Belait. – Daniel Lim
