Workers’ dormitories come under minister’s scrutiny

Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong visited several foreign workers’ housing areas in Brunei-Muara District yesterday.

The objective was to take a closer look at foreign workers’ living conditions at dormitories to ensure that the quarters were in line with the guidelines for housing standards issued by the Labour Department, which include compliance to the requirement of providing segregation areas for healthy workers and those under quarantine order (QO) issued by

the government, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Permanent Secretary (Safety, Welfare and Law) at the MoHA Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud, acting deputy permanent secretary at the MoHA, Commissioner of Labour and MoHA senior officers were also present.

The visit focussed on several types of workers’ residences – dormitories as well as commercial and private rented residences.

The Labour Department reminded employers to frequently monitor their employees’ welfare and whereabouts in accordance with the Employment Order 2009 requirements.
