Winners crowned in national spelling bee

The Ministry of Education through the Arts and Creativity Division of the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, in collaboration with Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) Brunei, held the finals of the Brunei Darussalam National Spelling Bee Competition 2024 at Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre yesterday.

Muhammad Azka Maleek bin Muhammad Jasni from Kuala Belait Secondary School won the Year 1 male category while Nurfairuz Hawani binti Azman from Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin Secondary School won the Year 1 female category.

Meanwhile, Abdul Qawweem Hashim bin Abdullah from Masin Secondary School was named the winner in the Year 10 male category while Tiffany Lim from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College was the winner in Year 10 female category.

Senior Special Duties Officer (Professional) from the Department of Schools Haji Metussin bin Haji Jais presented the prizes to the winners.

The competition was divided into four main categories – primary school boys, primary school girls, secondary school boys and secondary school girls. Some 797 students participated in the competition at the cluster level with 120 competing in the finals.

The competition aimed to celebrate the skills of English language spelling, especially among children in the Sultanate. It is also expected to raise the prestige of the competition throughout the country. – Adib Noor
