A recent newspaper headline, ‘Malaysia mulls law to end Ali Baba culture’, caught my attention, especially because our neighbour is making the effort to combat these rent-seeking activities, including conducting a study on the culture and drafting policies to curb it.
Our country has also been seen an increase in rent-seeking activities, from small convenience stores to large-scale businesses. Since foreigners who ‘rent’ these business licences tend to practise nepotism, it doesn’t benefit the local workforce.
I believe it is high time that the authorities do something to curb this Ali Baba culture and instead, come up with policies that benefit the people of our country.
