Brunei Darussalam’s veteran football team emerged runners-up of the VIP World Football Federation (VWFF) Asia Championship 2023 at the Gelora Bung Karno Complex in Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday.
The country’s sole representative lost 2-1 to Indonesia ‘A’ in the final with Thailand taking third place.
In the semifinals, Brunei edged Indonesia ‘B’ 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out to earn a shot for the title. Earlier, Brunei topped their group following a perfect record followed by Indonesia ‘A’.
Indonesia ‘B’ and Thailand also secured their last-four berths as the top two teams of the other group. The inaugural tournament aimed to create solidarity especially among Asian nations and also served as preparation for the VWFF World Cup 2023. – Fadhil Yunus
