Vessel fined BND700 for violating telecommunications order

Lyna Mohamad

A company operating a vessel in Brunei waters found violating a section of the Telecommunications Order, 2001 was issued a warning notice and compound fine BND700 by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI).

The company was found operating several radio-communication equipment and possessing a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) equipment on board the vessel without the licences, which is an offence under S35(1) of the Order.

The authority said unlicenced systems or services may cause interference to critical infrastructure and essential services, which may hinder day-to-day operations of government agencies, local service providers, educational institutions and businesses relying on telecommunications.

Businesses and the public are encouraged to apply licences pertaining to establishment, installation, maintenance, provision or operation of any system or service related to telecommunications or radio-communications via AITI’s online services portal.

The public can also help with efforts to curb any unlicenced activities by lodging complaints via e-mail.
