To mark World Arabic Language Day 2024 and recognise the importance of the Arabic language in Brunei Darussalam, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), through its Arabic Language Faculty, launched the Arabic Language Carnival 2024.

This year’s World Arabic Language Day carries the theme ‘Arabic Language and AI: Advancing Innovation while Preserving Cultural Heritage’.

The ceremony, which coincided with the Brunei December Festival 2024, featured an Arabic Language Speech Competition participated by eight students from UNISSA and Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB).

The Dean of the Arabic Language Faculty Dr Hajah Rafidah binti Haji Abdullah, the ceremony guest of honour, presented prizes to the competition winners.

Dr Hajah Rafidah emphasised the importance of harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to improve Arabic language teaching and learning. However, she also stressed the need to preserve cultural heritage in the face of technological advancements.

The objectives of the competition include inculcating students’ interest in the Arabic language; improving Arabic language skills among higher education students; producing skilled, confident and articulate orators; and enhancing students’ communication abilities in Arabic for academic, professional and global needs. – Lyna Mohamad
