The Magistrate’s Court last Thursday sentenced a 56-year-old local to two years’ jail after he pleaded guilty to two charges of theft in a dwelling.
Prosecutor Nurul Husna binti Haji Abidin revealed in court that Haji Md Azahar bin Haji Md Yusof went to his family home in Kampong Serasa, Muara on March 17 where he was seen going into a storeroom and taking a beach umbrella.
He then hid the umbrella at a nearby orchard.
The defendant’s nephew on checking found that his fishing equipment was missing.
In the evening, the nephew confronted the defendant who denied taking anything at first.
After persistently asking, the defendant admitted to having taken the fishing equipment, selling some off and hiding the rest.
The defendant also told his nephew that he had taken the fishing equipment on another day, before taking the beach umbrella.
They then went to retrieve one of the fishing equipment from the buyer and the nephew bought it back.
The defendant said that the rest of the fishing equipment had gone from where he hid them, which prompted the nephew to file a police report. The beach umbrella was retrieved.
The defendant said he did so to get money for drugs.
It was also unearthed that the defendant frequents the family home to ask for food and sometimes money.
