Turkiye announces suspension of wheat imports to protect local farmers

ANKARA (XINHUA) – Turkiye has announced the suspension of wheat imports from June 21 until October 15 to protect local producers.

The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said in a statement posted on its website that the decision was made in line with foreign trade measures recommended by the Ministry of Trade, adding that further measures would also be taken.

The move aimed to prevent the Turkish producers from being affected by price decreases caused by supply density during the harvest period, to meet the raw material supply required for exports from domestic production, and to ensure market stability in favour of producers, according to the statement, said Xinhua.

The import suspension could be extended beyond October 15, depending on “market conditions on that date”, it noted.

Turkiye imported more than USD5 billion worth of grains last year and is one of the main importers in the market.
