Jalan Beribi: No longer a safe thoroughfare

Jalan Beribi, originally designed as a tranquil single-lane thoroughfare with a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour, has become increasingly hazardous, due to the rising number of high-speed motor vehicles. The removal of most speed humps over the years has also led many drivers to use the road as a shortcut, resulting in a significant increase in traffic.

As a kampong (village) road, it features narrow lanes, blind spots and various dangerous corners, with houses situated closely along its path. The combination of high-speed vehicles and challenging road conditions has led to numerous near misses. The community often finds themselves in precarious situations as cars, heavy vehicles and motorcycles zip by, disregarding their safety, making everyday activities, such as exiting the junction or crossing the road, a source of anxiety.

The noise from revving engines adds to the disruption, particularly at night, making it difficult for residents to rest and feel secure in their own homes. Given these alarming conditions, it is crucial for the authorities to take immediate action. Implementing speed humps, similar to those on adjacent kampong roads, could effectively slow down traffic and enhance safety for all residents. Increased signage and awareness campaigns on speed limit could also help encourage more responsible driving behaviour.

By prioritising the safety of our community, we can create a more secure environment for everyone who lives along Jalan Beribi and other kampong roads. We thus urge the authorities to consider these measures promptly to mitigate the risks and protect our villagers.
