Tropical storm to influence weather, says BDMD

Tropical Storm GAEMI, 1,700 kilometres away from Brunei Darussalam at 8am yesterday, is expected to indirectly influence the weather in the Sultanate. Slightly windy conditions are expected in the upcoming days with potential gusty showers or thundershowers, especially at sea and coastal areas, said the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) in a statement yesterday.

The BDMD added that the storm is forecast to move northwestwards and away from the Sultanate. However, wind gust of up to 60 kilometres per hour is expected during or near heavy showers while over Brunei waters, the sea state is generally slight to moderate, with wave height of 0.6-1.7 metres.

Brunei Darussalam is currently in the southwest monsoon which will typically persist until September, said BDMD, adding that during the southwest monsoon, atmospheric conditions over the country tend to be stable with minimal thunderstorms compared to during the inter-monsoon period.

The winds will generally be blowing from the southwest direction during this period.

BDMD advised the public to take precautionary actions as there is high risk of trees falling and landslides during gusty and heavy showers as well as the risk of flash floods, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas and near river banks.

The public is also advised to be up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by the department.
