The Ministry of Education, through the Department of Educators Management, in collaboration with the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) held a Teachers’ Day Conference 2023 in conjunction with the 33rd Teacher’s Day celebration.
The conference, at Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Chancellor Hall, carried the theme ‘Building a Resilient Education Ecosystem’.
Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh was the guest of honour.
Some 500 teachers and educators representing primary and secondary schools and sixth form centres including schools under the purview of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB), the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE), as well as higher education institutions registered to participate in the conference.
Assistant Professor and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education Dr Hajah Norwati binti Haji Abu Bakr as conference co-chairperson said the conference aims to provide teachers a platform to discuss research findings as well as evidence-based views on the latest innovative practices in improving the performance of teachers and students in an effort to build a resilient educational system.
The conference featured the presentation of a keynote address ’Data Speaks, PISA and Beyond, Facts, Myths and Implications for Teaching’ by Pro-Vice Chancellor and a Professor of Educational Psychology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Professor Hau Kit-Tai.
This was followed by a plenary session led by Acting Deputy Ra’es of KUPU SB Dr Haji Abang Hadzmin bin Haji Abang Taha, who delivered a lecture ‘Teacher Quality in Islamic Perspective and Its Relationship with Educational Transformation’.
In the afternoon session, 57 parallel paper presentations and six workshops were held.
Permanent secretaries at the Ministry of Education (MoE), Vice Chancellors, Rector, deputy permanent secretaries at the MoE, as well as heads of departments and senior officers from the ministry and higher education institutions also attended. – Rokiah Mahmud
