Three villages get new heads

Kampong Merangking

Nurulizam bin Haji Abdul Rahman was elected as the new village head of Kampong Merangking after receiving 118 votes at the Community Hall in the Belait District yesterday.

A total of 121 residents cast their votes, with 118 voting in favour and three voting against. No votes were cast through the PMKK e-voting application.

Nurulizam, 36, the sole candidate, works as a driver for the Belait District Office (JDB).

Speaking to the Bulletin, the newly-elected village head expressed his gratitude to the supporters for voting for him.

He said, “I am an active member of the village consultative council at Kampong Merangking. We organise annual sports activities, family day, futsal and sepak takraw matches for our community.” Nurulizam said he aims to develop the village by promoting locally-made products, produce and handicrafts while fostering grassroots growth.

Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad, Legislative Council (LegCo) members Penghulu Mukim of Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman, Village Head of Kampong Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann and representative from Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Mohammad Haazeq bin Arsad oversaw the voting.

The results will be submitted to the Board of Appointments, Discipline and Procedures for Mukim Penghulu and Village Heads at the MoHA to be processed. – Daniel Lim

Kampong Kiarong

Voting serves as a crucial mechanism for every villager and citizen to choose their leader at grassroots level, determining the suitability of the candidate for the role of village head, said Special Duties Officer Grade II at the Brunei-Muara District Office Pengiran Kamal Ariffin bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Yassin.

He said this at the voting and nominating of the new village head of Kampong Kiarong yesterday. Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Lumapas ‘B’ Yang Berhormat Mohamad Ali bin Tanjong also participated.

Pengiran Kamal Ariffin continued by highlighting the responsibilities of a village head in safeguarding the interests and safety of the village while fostering understanding, solidarity and harmony among the residents.

Mohammad Shair bin Haji Samsuddin, the only candidate, has been a resident of the village since 1990. The voting saw 89 in favour and four against.

Mohammad Shair, 34, is a Master of Islamic Finance holder who graduated from Universiti Brunei Darussalam in 2015 and is the acting village head of Kampong Kiarong Area I and II in Mukim Gadong ‘B’.

Haji Mohd Massan bin Haji Ahmad nominated his candidacy supported by Haji Rajali bin Haji Tujoh and Haji Osman bin Haji Nayan.

Senior Special Duties Officer at the Office of Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) Sharinah binti Haji Awang as a representative of the Ministry of Home Affairs was also present. – Lyna Mohamad

Kampong Sungai Akar

The Brunei-Muara District Office appointed Haji Muhammad Wafil Wafee bin Haji Ramli as the new village head of Kampong Sungai Akar, Area 2 in Mukim Berakas ‘B’ at the Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Mosque in Kampong Sungai Akar yesterday.

Haji Muhammad Wafil Wafee, 32, working as a supervisor at Oriente Sdn Bhd, has been residing in the village since 1992.

Legislative Council member and Kampong Subok Village Head Yang Berhormat Lawi bin Haji Lamat led the voting where 101 ballots were in favour of the sole candidate.

Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer Pengiran Muhammad Ameer Mubaarak bin Pengiran Haji Hashim, in his speech, emphasised the role of a village head as a liaison between the government and the residents, while underlining the responsibility in safeguarding the village’s interests and fostering harmony.

He also urged residents to make wise decisions during a voting as it determines the village’s future. – Lyna Mohamad
