TYPES OF CALADIUMS

There are several types of caladiums, each boasting distinct characteristics and the most popular varieties include:

Fancy leaf Caladiums

These are the most recognised for their flamboyant, large leaves with intricate patterns. They can feature bold contrasts of green, pink and white, perfect for brightening up shaded areas.

Lance leaf Caladiums

Characterised by their narrower leaves, these caladiums are ideal for tighter spaces and containers. Their elegant shape and more subdued coloration make them a versatile choice for various landscaping designs.

Striped leaf Caladiums

With their distinctive stripes and unique colouration, these caladiums add an exotic touch to gardens, often catching the eye with their artistic patterns.

Caladiums thrive in the warm, humid conditions of equatorial regions, making them particularly suited for our Borneon weather.

They typically grow best in partial to full shade, as direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. However, they are not without their quirks.

GROWTH HABIT AND DORMANCY

One of the most notable features of caladiums is their dormancy. As the rainy season winds down and temperatures drop, caladiums will begin to go dormant.

This behaviour can be alarming for first-time growers, who may panic upon noticing their once-vibrant plants suddenly retreating underground.

“Where did my caladium go?” they might exclaim, peering suspiciously at the empty soil.

Fear not, dear gardeners! This is merely a natural cycle. Experienced caladium enthusiasts understand that this disappearing act is part of their charm. After a period of dormancy, usually lasting several months, these resilient plants will emerge once more.

TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS

For those new to the world of caladiums, patience is key. Here are some tips to help you navigate their growth cycle:

Plant in well-draining soil

Ensure that your caladiums have a good foundation. This will help prevent rot during their dormant phase.

Water regularly during the growing season

Keep the soil consistently moist (but not soggy) to encourage healthy growth. However, reduce watering significantly once they begin to die back.

Be patient with dormancy

Instead of worrying when your caladiums disappear, embrace the downtime as a well-deserved break for your plants.

Store bulbs properly

If you decide to lift the bulbs during dormancy, keep them in a cool, dry place to prevent rot. When you’re ready to plant again, they should spring back to life with a little love.

Caladiums can be an exciting yet sometimes frustrating plant for beginners. Their dramatic seasonal changes may lead to confusion, but understanding their growth habits can transform your gardening experience.

Seasoned gardeners appreciate the ebb and flow of caladium life; it’s like being part of a secret club where the initiation involves a few shrieks of panic and a lot of chuckles.

With a little patience and care, your caladiums will reward you with a dazzling display, proving that sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for. – Wardi Wasil
