Teachers told to upskill to meet 21st Century needs

Teachers need to improve their 21st Century pedagogical knowledge and skills as they play a very important role in the teaching and learning process in the classroom.

This was said by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman at the opening ceremony for the induction programme for new teachers yesterday at Musyawarah Hall, International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas. He also said that teachers are not only responsible for imparting knowledge, but also in making sure that students can master their learning.

He underlined the importance of applying critical thinking, problem solving and creative thinking skills to be integrated in the learning and teaching process.

The deputy permanent secretary also called on teachers to constantly improve their pedagogical skills to stay relevant and interesting and uphold their professionalism to be role models for the students, parents and the community.

Acting Director of the Department of Educators Management cum Chairperson of the programme Masdiah binti Haji Tuah said 120 teachers are taking part in the five-day induction programme, which she believed plays an important role in providing guidance at the early stage in channelling important information, such as policies and initiatives being implemented by the MoE, as well as principles of morals and work ethics in performing job duties well.

The acting director also touched on the continuous efforts by the MoE in realising the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21) and obtain the maximum effect of holistic education for all students, including those with special needs.

“Alhamdulillah, various efforts have been implemented to give priority to ensuring a more inclusive education system.”

The induction programme aims to expose new teachers to the essential part of the role as an educator as well as a civil servant in the MoE.

The five-day programme being held until March 6, are participated by newly-appointed teachers recruited through the Immersion and Apprentice Programme as well as teachers appointed to the Department of Special Education.
